Covert Video & Camcorder Surveillance

The next electronic surveillance device we will consider is the covert television camera.  There are covert still photo cameras, but these are usually found on store shelves, behind the cashier, wrapped in a wooden frame with cloth on the front rather like a speaker for a small stereo system. These are not so much for surveillance as they are for identification and later conviction of anyone who would attempt to rob these stores of convenience.
Video surveillance cameras have evolved very rapidly in recent years becoming smaller, with sharper pictures and better able to see in low light conditions. There are cameras that are battery powered and some that need no wires to send their signals to a monitor or recorder. These cameras can transmit either color or black and white images and like their cousins, the surveillance microphones, this generation of surveillance cameras can be incorporated into common household objects such as smoke detectors, wall clocks, hanging pictures, VCR's, televisions and stuffed animals. Operatives can have tiny cameras hidden in eyeglasses, neckties, baseball caps, button up jackets, beepers, ink pens and on and on.

The Do It Yourself Detective
Certainly everyone has seen an investigative reporter exposing a crooked business owner with the help of a hidden camera and tape recorder.
These devices are out there and manufacturers make huge sums of money selling them. Cameras can cost as little as $100 - $150, but a pocket size VCR can cost $900 - $1000.
