The Do It Yourself Detective
Trust Your Kids or The Babysitter?
What if the problem is with the kids? Well, if you have a teenager whose behavior has radically changed, their grades dropping and a new host of friends has appeared, you want to carefully look at what they're up to. In this case a good physical search of their room is in order and certainly monitoring of their phone conversations. Of course, we're worried about drug abuse here and as far as I'm concerned, any and all measures are allowable to save a child from that nightmare. Surveillance of their activities is absolutely indicated and if all three types must be employed, do it.
Surveillance of your children does not always entail watching them, but rather the adult who is left to care for them. Some typical signs that the children might be at risk from the sitter would be uncontrollable crying, screaming or fussing when the sitter arrives that does not subside after the first two or three sitting episodes. In a case like this you want to check the child carefully for any marks on their body that would indicate physical abuse. Check food and diaper supplies to make sure that feedings and changings are being done when and as often as they are supposed to be. Of course, before this ever gets this far you must thoroughly check the qualifications and references of anyone who is to care for your child in your absence.
If you suspect something is not as it should be you have two choices, you can investigate or you can terminate. Either way do not hesitate. Young children can not take care of themselves and if they are very young they can not even tell you if something is out of the ordinary with the baby sitter. Unfortunately this situation does occur more often than we would like to be aware of. There have been children who have been abused to the point of serious injury or even death. Parents are usually very much aware of what is going on with their children. As a matter
of fact the parents of a child who has been abused by a caregiver are very often the successful investigators of what is going on with their child or children. When a parent takes advantage of the resources available to them to conduct their own investigation, there is nothing they can not learn about what is going on.
