The Do It Yourself Detective
What To Look For - A Good P.I.

Next on your list of things to check when hiring an investigator is whether or not they do the type of investigation that you want conducted. There are many investigators that so all types of investigations from asset searches to divorce, child custody and wrongful death. There are others that specialize in just one area. There are detectives that do only background searches for pre-employment requirements, others that only look at assets.  Others that only do security and executive protection and still others that only provide missing persons searches.
You have the right to ask if the investigator does person locates and how many they've done. You're going to ask how much it's going to cost, so why not find out if this person is reasonably experienced in the work you want done.
Just like physicians, you wouldn't go to an urologist if you needed heart surgery, so don't go to a P.I. who doesn't do missing persons locates. Also, don't hesitate to ask for references. We are happy to have former clients speak on our behalf when a potential client wants to know what caliber the investigations are that we perform.
When discussing fees and results of investigations, I can tell you that we get very uncomfortable when we hear investigators make promises about how much the whole case will cost and how long it will take.  There are some cases that are flat rated due to the type of investigation. Results are never guaranteed.
I've never been able to predict either one of those no matter how simple the case appears in the beginning. Investigations are like a road with many turns, dead ends, entrances and exits and the unknown variables that occur when dealing with the human race.
If you do by chance find an investigator that you feel comfortable with who makes such promises, make sure that all guarantees are recorded in the contract. Don't do anything and don't let them do anything until you have a contract in hand signed by all parties and you're comfortable with all the clauses.
