The Do It Yourself Detective
It's Time For A Professional Investigator

For those of you who have read my other information topics, this will be redundant. For those of you who are reading my work for the first time, I always discuss the hiring of a private investigator when you have exhausted all options of doing the work yourself.
There is no shame in asking for help and quite frankly most people go directly to an investigator without trying to do anything themselves first. If and when you decide that you do need professional help there are a few things I recommend you should do.
First and foremost, make sure that your investigator is licensed by the state in which you are located. Very rarely will you find an investigator who is not, but they are out there.  So if your state requires private investigators to be licensed make sure that the one you talk to is before you hire them.

Licensing can be verified easily by contacting the state office that oversees the private investigation industry in your state.  Usually this would be under the Department of State, the Division of Professional Licensing or sometimes the Department of Law Enforcement or the Department of Agriculture. Most states have websites that can be easily accessed and searches can be conducted to check an investigator's license status as well as whether or not they have ever been reprimanded by their state.
If you are not sure who to contact in your state we have provided the Private Investigator State Administration in charge on this website for each of all 50 states which will follow in the next sections.
