CASE # 3 Missing Child
The client came to my office explaining that her 21 year old daughter had not called to check in for over a month and had quit her job and moved out f her apartment. Could I help find her. After explaining that as a legal adult the daughter was under no legal obligation to notify the Mom of her whereabouts or her activities, I agreed to see what I could find out.
Foul play was ruled out and in the process of filling in my checklist I learned that there was a boyfriend that Mom did not like and a falling out had occurred just prior to the daughter leaving her job and moving out of her apartment.
I did have all the primary information including last known address and last employer. A phone call to the apartment complex confirmed that our girl had moved, but it was against company policy to give out any information or tenants. I immediately shifted into pretext mode and explained that I worked for an attorney and was trying to locate this woman. I further explained that she had just inherited a large sum of money and there existed a large finder's fee for whomever put me in touch with my missing person. Let me tell you that I could not wire fast enough as the information poured out from this apartment manager's mouth.
My next move was to find the new address and set up surveillance. I did not have to wait long as my target and her boyfriend soon emerged, got into a car whose tag number confirmed the vehicle belonged to her. Following the couple downtown I watched as the boyfriend dropped his girlfriend off to her new job and then drove off to his place of business. I returned to their apartment and confirmed on the mailbox that they were living together.
I notified my client of her daughter's whereabouts, her new apartment, job and roommate. Another happy ending.
