The Do It Yourself Detective
CASE # 2    Parental Abduction

The female client came to my office with the story that her ex-husband failed to return their three year old son back form his weekend visit. When asked if there had been any expectation of kidnapping the response was absolutely not as her ex-husband was a respected medical doctor.
The first action was to check the status of his practice and we learned that he no longer practiced at that location and no forwarding information was given to his co-workers. In fact, the good doctor was reported saying that he was planning to travel abroad and in fact probably practice in the Caribbean for a while after an extended vacation.
My next move, of course, was to notify the proper authorities to initiate legal action and then I got down to business. Realizing that I had to move fast, I quizzed the ex-wife about the relatives of the boy's father, where he went to medical school and where we might find a network of people where he could reasonably expect a network of friends to help him.
I knew if he left the country it would be a long time before my client would see her little boy again.  In fact, the next time the little boy could easily be an adolescent. The process of filling in the blanks of my checklist allowed me to put the puzzle together rather quickly. The picture came as California. Our boy was probably headed for the state where his Mom was living, where he went to medical school and where one of his best friends from medical school had a busy practice.

Case Histories
A telephone call to the Division of Professional Licensing confirmed that his license had been granted the month prior and I even managed to sweet talk an address for the doctor on the run. I then forwarded the information to local authorities who arrested him and returned the three year old to his Mother.
