What is Counter Surveillance?

Counter surveillance by its very name can conjure visions of spy vs. spy in exotic locations with good looking James Bond types, beautiful, but dangerous women or bearded brutes wearing red fez hats. One can imagine scenes of searching under furniture, behind framed art work or even each other for that hidden microphone.
Let us not forget the mysterious black sedan that pulls into traffic right behind us and stays on our tail from home to the day care to the grocery store and back again. Is this truly the stuff of novels and the movies?  Possibly, if this activity does occur it can only happen at the very highest level of governments where secret agencies are charged with protecting important national defense secrets.
The answer to these questions is yes, governments and their agents are still hard at work in these activities, but so are operatives on a more local level.

Basic Counter Measures
Some of these operatives may be associated with law enforcement, but a very large number of counter measure cases expose private investigators as well as private individuals. Proof can be as close as your local shopping mall where compact, but powerful binoculars and high quality, automatic 35 MM as well as digital cameras with built in telephoto lenses are inexpensive and readily accessible to anyone. Then our amateur spy has only to walk on down to the Radio Shack and pick up a fairly good miniature, wireless FM
transmitter (a bug) for about twenty dollars. There are also magazines on every rack that advertise devices for sale that will allow someone to look, listen or both and record someone else with little risk of detection, unless you know what to look for.  This is where this website may be helpful.
