Your Telephone
The last problem we are going to examine is your telephone.
As was mentioned earlier, if you use either a cordless phone or a cellular phone you are using transmitters that you yourself brought onto your premises. The easiest way to counter these devices is not to use them. If you are one of those individuals who just can't live without the conveniences, well, just don't say anything on them that you don't want to broadcast over the airwaves in all directions. You can not know who is scanning your wireless communications and although laws have been passed regarding eaves dropping and technology advances have made it more difficult it still occurs. Be careful.
Wireless phones are easily monitored. Regular, wired phones are able to be monitored also, but not quite so easily. If your telephone hand piece can be opened up, a wireless transmitter can be placed inside the mouth piece under the diaphram which is easily lifted out of the hand piece. There are now software programs that can trap conversations and are very difficult to detect. The legality of such a program is questionable as well as how easy it is to do and how well they work for the average citizen.
Telephone taps and cell phone eavesdropping has taken on a whole new seriousness. There are new computer programs that can be purchased by anyone and installed on a home computer. No longer does an operative have to enter the target residence or business to tap or bug the premises. Once the software is installed on the computer, the target telephone or cell phone can be dialed and the telephone microphone becomes the listening device. Anything within ten to twenty feet of the telephone or cell phone can be secretly listened to as well as both sides of the conversation.
These devices are called infinity devices and they are very difficult to discover. If you suspect your spouse is trying to listen in on your conversations, first a virus scan or anti spyware might pick up on the software. If your telephone or cell phone rings and no one is there, it could be an infinity bug. If you detect unusual sounds on your telephone, be careful what you say. If you suspect that this might be the case for your telphone there are devices that can help locate these bugs, but they are difficult. You're best bet here really is an electronic counter measure expert.
Once again the physical search is also critical. If the phone tap is within the boundary of your physical location you have a good chance of locating it. What I mean by this is that if someone is tapping your phone beyond the box outside, on your building wall you are not likely to detect anything. Inside your physical domain is quite another matter. Several places to look would be at all phone jacks. Pop the covers off and make sure there are no devices attached with alligator clips. A small box with alligator clips could be and probably is a transmitter. Next, go outside and open the junction box for your phone line and again look for the alligator clips.
The Do It Yourself Detective
If you have phone lines that run through an attic or basement you should also inspect these areas. The automatic telephone recorders are easily placed in such locations by splicing into these wire runs. If your physical search fails to turn up anything you can always call in the professionals.
For the telephone, call your customer service representative for your provider and ask them if they provide any service for checking for taps. In some parts of the country some will do this. There may be a fee
associated with the service and if they do check and it is law enforcement, don't expect them to tell you. If they don't provide such a service then contract with a professional.
As I said earlier electronic devices are difficult to detect by the average citizen. I would like to point out to you that you are no longer an average citizen.
